I'd say it's safe to say that you're reading too much into my comment considering I kind of forgot about your hemming question.
My only concern with the dress as it is now would be wear and tear on the train should you ever decide to wear it somewhere, but I think that will be a concern regardless of whether or not you have a train.
Sooo much fabric...
